Delhi Grapples with Severe Air Pollution Crisis: Measures Taken to Tackle the Issue

Delhi, November 7, 2023 – The Indian capital, Delhi, is once again in the grip of a severe air pollution crisis, with air quality levels plunging to hazardous levels. Residents are facing significant health risks as pollution-related concerns surge.

Current Air Quality Index (AQI):
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in several parts of Delhi has crossed the 400 mark, categorizing it as “Severe.” The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and PM10 has skyrocketed to levels deemed harmful to human health. Visibility has been drastically reduced, impacting daily life and traffic.

Causes of the Crisis:
The annual rise in air pollution during this time of the year is primarily attributed to a combination of factors, including the burning of crop residues in neighboring states, vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, and unfavorable weather conditions. The city’s geographical location, with its propensity to trap pollutants, exacerbates the issue.

Health Implications:
The deteriorating air quality in Delhi poses significant health risks. Prolonged exposure to high levels of air pollution can lead to respiratory problems, aggravate pre-existing health conditions, and increase the risk of heart disease. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory issues are advised to stay indoors.

Government Measures:
In response to the crisis, the Delhi government has implemented several measures to mitigate pollution levels. These include the strict enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a temporary ban on construction activities, and the Odd-Even scheme to regulate vehicular traffic.

Appeal to the Public:
Government authorities are urging residents to take precautions, including wearing N95 masks when outdoors and using air purifiers in homes. They have also advised citizens to limit outdoor activities, carpool when possible, and reduce the use of personal vehicles.

Long-Term Solutions:
Long-term solutions to combat air pollution in Delhi continue to be a topic of discussion. These include transitioning to cleaner energy sources, improving public transportation, and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.

The residents of Delhi are facing a grave challenge with the escalating air pollution crisis. Immediate action, along with long-term sustainable measures, is required to alleviate the suffering of the people and protect public health in the national capital.
